Mirjana Sekicki is a linguist and an artist currently based in Regensburg, Germany.
“ I sign my work with VERA because, in my dictionary, this word stands for embracing life. It holds a twofold meaning: both symbolic and personal. Vera stands for faith in my mother tongue, and is the root of the word trust. More importantly, it is my grandmother’s name. She taught me that no matter the circumstances you find a way to create beauty. ”
While pursuing a PhD, Mirjana encountered a part of herself that resisted confinement to the exactness of the scientific method. It was during this time that she discovered silk as a medium for her expression.
Silk remembers every drop of paint that touches it, not allowing for correction. Too precious to be discarded, it demands embracing unintended marks, muddying any intention of exactness. By keeping a permanent record of the process, silk not only invites humility and acceptance, but also allows for a visual representation of time.
Mirjana’s silk work can live on walls, yet it invites to be touched and carried thereby gathering new memories along the journey(s) it accompanies. Each piece embodies a sense of everyday luxury experienced through symbolism.
